Hello fellow club members,
This is a quick note from your committee to let you know what's going on in the club and to remind you of upcoming events.
First off, you would have seen the notice for the AGM which will be held on the 27th July at the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club from 18:30 for a 19:30 start.
It's a great opportunity for everyone to get together, ask questions and help set the future direction of the club with your feedback and involvement. We are also pretty happy with the way the past year has gone so will be enjoying a drink to celebrate.
In other news, I'm sure you have all seen the work that has gone into our clubrooms post removal of the portacoms. Our instructors are now as handy with paint brushes are they are with control columns and the club rooms are becoming something we can be proud of. We had investigated other options for rehousing the clubrooms, but in the end it looks like we will be in the Gibson Hangar for the forseeable future so it was worth the effort to spruce it up. This is still a work in progress and we very much appreciate the efforts of the various club members and instructing staff who have contributed. Also thank you to Rodney, Lawrence, Amy and others who have been helping out with the front desk on weekends. This is very helpful and much appreciated by the instructors when it gets busy.
As we don't (currently) have our own bar, the EBYMC have welcomed us as affiliate members that allows use of their bar and clubrooms as an extension of our own. This seems to be working well and gives us a home for our monthly drinks and more formal events.
After an unusually good summer – March was a real cracker with a record 220 hours of flying – we are now into winter with some excellent clear days interspersed with total rubbish! However it is now an ideal time to get your night rating or enjoy your night privileges after work when the evenings are clear. Just let Jelle know if you are keen.
A few congratulations are in order also:
The following club members have completed their first solo – a day they will remember always I'm sure – Matthew Buckland, Desmond Buckingham, Xingtao Liu and Nathan Dunning. Good one and best of luck with the rest of your training.
Stephen Holdaway, Paddy Payne and Peter MacLeod passed their PPL's – congratulations, and finally Jelle is our newest B Cat which is a great achievement and makes Simsy's life easier!
It looks like we will have a full CAA certified dual control simulator at the club in coming months. This is a seriously impressive bit of kit that is being developed by one of our club members for commercial use. This will be enormously helpful for IFR currency and training – including for PPL students to practise procedures on a rainy day. We will provide more details once it's up and going.
And on a final note, we can't have a president's note without a gentle plug for the Nanchang syndicate! As you know it was recently reformed and there are still shares available. It's a ton of fun and a good way to scare friends and family.
Safe flying,
Simon
