Young Eagles

Young Eagles is a scheme initiated in 1992 by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) in America. It is now a global movement designed to enable PPLs etc to put back something in to aviation by giving young people the opportunity to experience at least once, the thrill joy of flying.

Sir Tim Wallis is Patron of the Young Eagles in New Zealand which is administered by the Royal New Zealand Aero Club Inc, of which we are members.

Who can participate?

Any youngster with an interest in aviation and between 11 and 17 years of age.

How can you participate?

Emma Homes and Michael Rudman are the Wellington Aero Club’s Young Eagles Coordinators. They will organise the youngsters and sort out all clearances with their parents. Young Eagles will experience the fun of flight while also being introduced to the mechanics and principles of flight as well as flight radio and navigation. While they do not actually get to fly the plane, Young Eagles will have to opportunity to join Club pilots on flights out of Wellington International Airport.

How often?

Young Eagles generally meet once a month and may be invited to go flying, weather permitting.

Who pays?

The Young Eagles generally get the first flight free, but may be asked to contribute to second and subsequent flights at a rate of about $30 ea per hour. The Young Eagles will have a Log Book that is  filled out after each flight.
